I've been reading and studying The Catcher In The Rye since 1978 when I was 14. I've been liking and disliking and even hating Holden for the past 10 years. At 42 I can't identify with a 16-year-old. But I do, in a different way, because I even more strongly believe that the world is wrong and fails to live up to my standards and I think that not as a teenager would but as an older adult.
So many years of reading and studying The Catcher In The Rye and it took a study guide for me to see that the actual physical setting of the novel is this institution Holden mentions in the first chapter where he's been on account of the madman stuff and all that happened the previous Christmas time.
